Only managed to run using beta 1.6.5

Crackling during audio.
It took a while to find the correct proton version. All of the GE versions used omitted the holograms. By using 7.0-6, teamed up with version 1.6.5, the game plays wonderful. Graphics are set to Epic, and audio set to High.
Size: 1280x800
Screen Setting: Fullscreen
V-Sync: On
Texture Memory: 75%
Resolution Scale: 125
All other settings are default.

Oddly the game videos worked fine until just over half way through, then C.W. and video screens broke but holograms didn't. mf-install fixed it.
Videos (C.W., video screens, but not holograms) stopped working mysteriously a little more than half way through. mf-install fixed it.

Can't progress the story through interaction with characters due to the lack of holograms and people's video and audio.
All in-game spech (holograms, people) do not appear and can't be hear at all and can't be triggered. Game from GOG
All in-game videos (holograms, people) do not appear at all and can't be triggered. Game from GOG
Just one small minor thing - no in-game video and speech audio in GOG version - make this truly fabulous game unplayable :(

Yes, but only when the graphics engine is displaying lots of particles at the same time. This is only an issue for 20 seconds or so at the beginning of the game. But I only tested the game for 10 minutes or so....

At the time of writing this, the game is totally borked using the official Proton Experimental. The menu doesn't work, various assets won't load, and game saves are totally borked.
However, with Proton 6.3-8 through Proton 8.0-3 (and possibly even older; I didn't test it) the game runs flawlessly except for the background being absent from the pause menu. I didn't even notice the temporary stutter (framerate and audio) that's typical of DXVK when whipping the camera around or looking out over a busy scene! This is one of my favorite games and I'm so thankful to be able to play it!
Works out of the box
Install and play, no tinkering needed.
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command%
Turned out to be a hardware issue. RAM not stable with XMP.
I set the pulse latency variable pre-emptively based on other users' suggestions, never tried the game without it. Video playback issues reported by others seem to be resolved now. Initially I had issues with the game crashing every 30min or so, but Prime95 torture test revealed this to be a memory stability issue with XMP enabled. Reverting to the JEDEC memory profile in the BIOS solved the issue. The game ran perfectly after that.
Just works!
When activating the seeds, the game can pause briefly.
Handwritten notes on a small screen
Black screen after the logos
PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%
It doesn't run with standard proton and last version of GE-Proton doesn't make it playable as main menu cannot be reached.
Very playable and I have experienced no crashes in my short time so far. Picked GE because I heard of issues with the in-game videos on other versions of Proton.
I had one crash during the game. No problem after restarting the game.
Besides some minor stutters which soon settle down, everything works perfectly out of the box. No tweaks needed anymore
7.1-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom Installed through protonup in nixpkgs, also available through pip3. Version used: 7.1-GE-2
Occasional hitches in default Proton, probably related to loading. Nothing so far in GE.
Movies don't work in default Proton, but work fine in GE. It's worth the effort.

Just follow https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install, it work nicely for me !

The game doesn't launch

Proton-6.12-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Runs fine with Proton-6.12-GE-1, even the videos work.
No story videos, it doesn't prevent you from completing the game but leave out of some context
Aside from mfplat issues, game seems completely playable. VR with Valve Index used.
mfplat (Microsoft Platform Foundations Libraries) problem, so some videos don't play. So far does not seem to prevent progress and this is going to be resolved soon in Proton, with heavy development promising to fix that.
Can't view main menu on latest Proton, use 5.0-10. Requires MF installed to view videos. Runs well in flat-screen and VR modes
Standard game runs okay. VR is nonexistent.
Missing FMV actors (which I now only know about because of looking at this page)
VR is completely borked.

5.21-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Proton 5.21-GE-1
With Standard Proton, the "video instructors" don't show up.

The video pedestals will not show video unless MF DLLs are installed.
The crankshaft machine did not show the interaction guide for me, leaving me stuck for a while. Other interaction guides in the game worked properly.

5.9-GE-8-ST GloriousEggroll
Textures would pop in and out, though seldom. One or two character models were missing, but they don't affect the story or game-play.
Lags when entering new areas.
There were a few small issues here and there such as struggling to initiate fullscreen with the i3 window manager, some minor slow-down when walking around certain areas in the game, and infrequent graphical glitches. Strangely, the mfinstall method did not fix the videos for me, but using a slightly older branch of Proton-GE did. Other than these things, the performance was good (120+ FPS on Epic settings/1440p, low AA, no vsync) and I was able to do a complete playthrough of the game with all achievements.
You just need to install this or the videos won't work : https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install

It's playable with an alpha branch of wine + proton + some patches. This is NOT an official branch, I was extremely curious about the bleeding edge.
Black start screen: Hitting Esc (possibly any other key) or clicking the mouse was required on a black loading screen. I suspect a video format not yet supported by the alpha branch of wine + the patches included by the individual that compiled the build.
As far as I could tell, all of the actual in game videos worked and the game was no worse than I recall seeing someone stream.
Also, I played it for SLIGHTLY under 10 hours (due to already knowing the basis for solving some puzzles) It would be nice if >10 hours was extended to include ">10 hours OR completed the game".
Random slow-downs whenever visiting a new location. I can only surmise that the game isn't caching compiled shaders and is compiling them on the fly.
Playback of videos is required to make any progress in the game; they don't play.
To get windowed working properly I had to configure windowed, manually shrink the window down smaller than the target resolution, and only then apply the target resolution (that enlarged the window to match).
Autodetection of GPU hardware in game either failed, or they need to warn about shader compellation causing stutters. Either way reducing settings to Medium was good enough.
The video codec issue is still a major problem; it seems the game relies on cutscenes to provide puzzle instructions and I was only able to deduce what I was missing by reading prior ProtonDB reviews comparing against LP videos.
random slowdowns but instant
FMV does not work out of the box.
FMV does not play by default. I thought I was playing the game as it was and even solved some puzzles, but got stuck. Initially I thought the buttons that actually play the video were for saving the game. Came to protondb and found the fix, just reiterating info for any others that need it. Download https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install (checked the code, its OK) and run it using the command at the readme replacing the number with 306760 (obduction steam id).

Be warm, you have to install https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install to have videos inside the game, without videos you will understand nothing because all of the game is explain by this

In game videos don't work making game unplayable.

starting game is nice and crisp. Some resource loading hick-ups during gameplay when exploring an area for the first time.

Game runs OK but FMV doesn't work which makes it unplayable.

Needs to cache shaders, after it's super smooth: 130+fps maxed out

Audio stutters, game stutters from time to time due to shader compilation, is very slow in general, FMVs don't appear to play which makes the game unbeatable.
