It is an older game, so curb your expectations as far as UI design goes. If you can do that, the game runs as you would expect it to.
Final Fantasy XI Online Full (US) with D8VK
Hit and miss when it comes to setup. I simply could not get this game to run at all through steam, it wasnt until I tried with Lutris and got access to Lutris's Log's that I realized that my Linux box was trying to use the Nouveau drivers instead of the Mesa drivers that are installed, Steam game me no such way to easily diagnose that.
So for Steam, I would say if you are lucky, then maybe it will be an effortless install, or if you are like me you will waste hours trying to get steam to work, trying every version of proton available including GE.
but, if at first it doesnt succeed, see if you can find logs, and confirm if it is using the correct Graphics Drivers for your system, because in my case it wasnt
Simply cannot launch, which means I cannot install through launcher
Tried Multiple versions of Proton (Experimental, 5.0, 7.0, 8.0) I do have Winetricks installed. Simply doesnt launch.
Running Plasma KDE 6 with Wayland... I am guessing that may be related.
chsnge to the proton version listed in this report
gamemoderun %command%
minimizing would cause crash
Seeming memory leak, game plays fine for about a half hour then progressively chugs when moving.
Playonline is finicky when installing, crashed a couple times
Chugging
Runs better on Linux with Proton than it ran on Windows!
Multiplayer was much smoother in Linux on Proton than it was on a native Windows install!
it took a second try to have my xbox controller conneted via BT detected in FFXI config
Plays just like in Windows
Must select Xinput for Xbox Controller button configuration to work. Works great on lastest Proton version (7.0-4) no need to downgrade version for me. I have played a lot of FFXI (not on Steam) and installed that game quite a few times so I am familiar with the setup which can be a bit confusing. I tried this on Lutris and via Steam since I re-bought the game on Steam during a sale and I am glad that I did since the initial update of the game was a lot quicker in Steam then on Lutris and I never got the controller to be detected in Lutris.
Had to adjust wiFi power saving in game mode to prevent random disconnects
XInput needs to be enabled for the controller to work correctly.
Ran smoothly and without issue. Used an older version of proton I'd seen recommended. Make sure to run the ffxi configuration before the game to make your your gamepad settings are correct (xinput).
Works great!
Game works flawlessly after changing input to Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad. Set controller to Xinput in the Final Fantasy XI configuration.
Old hardware does not support Vulkan so I use D3D out of necessity
Shuddering
The game works perfectly on Proton 4.11 and older
In proton 5.0 and newer the game will hag on a black screen. This can be worked around by switching to an older Proton version for this game
Still runs great. Recent changes in 4.11-3 (vs -2) pretty much require you use Steam's controller emulation if want to use a PS4 controller. I don't consider this a real work around, partially because I was already doing that for other reasons, and because its a normal part of the Steam Client. Some might feel this would make it Gold, but I don't think so.
I didn't need to do anything that I wouldn't have had to do in Windows 7 (and in fact its somewhat easier since you don't deal with UAC). Configured controller just fine. Graphics are fine, FPS, fine...
The only thing I needed to do was turn off Steam Overlay for the game, otherwise PlayOnline would crash during its startup syncing. As for the controller all I needed to do was to select Alternate Gamepad Config (E) in FFXI Config Gamepad Settings.
Everything works including settings and controller config.
The PlayOnline splash screen comes up with an error box "Unknown error 0x80040154"
