During the initial launch, you need to accept the Ubisoft computer specifications checker and product registration using a mouse or keyboard as the controller isn't functional at this stage. After creating a profile, you can switch the controller settings from keyboard/mouse to an Xbox 360 controller, and everything should work seamlessly. You will need to bind the "return" keyboard key to one of the controllers, and this is to select the profile you created, and after that you can use your controller as normal.
Worked out of the box
Installed the game, started up and everything worked without any modifications.
DXVK_ASYNC=1 DXVK_STATE_CACHE=0 RADV_PERFTEST=aco %command% /autorun /autoquit
Although the game is primarily focused on online play, even in private mode, the game still retrieves market data from online sources. However, I had the opportunity to test the game within OpenPlay, which is an entirely online platform, and I was delighted to discover that it worked seamlessly.
After installing the game, I clicked play and the game's launcher appeared, offering me the option to install the Odyssey expansion, which I promptly did. However, when I started the game, I found that the intro was sluggish and laggy. To resolve this, I experimented with some launch options.
Unfortunately, the launcher itself became frustrating, as it kept reappearing every time I stopped the game. So, I added the /autorun and /autoquit flags to the launcher options, which enabled me to bypass the launcher entirely and automatically start and quit the game.
Since then, I've been enjoying the game without any issues. I've been trading between stations and even had to fend off a pirate who tried to interdict me. Overall, it's been a great experience!
Works perfectly fine
Installed, and started up right put of the box with zero tinkering.
Working Puzzle Game
The game successfully installed and started without any tinkering using the steam defaults. No issues I could find during gameplay.
Game Loads Perfectly, Starts with Keyboard
The game installed and launched without any issues. Just a heads-up, you'll need a keyboard to type in your character's name at the beginning. I managed easily with a virtual keyboard, so it wasn't a big deal. Other than that, I've been having lots of fun so far!
Enjoyable and fun
The game installed and played fine on ChimeraOS without any tinkering.
Works right outta the box
I haven't tested any online features, so I can't comment on those. But once I installed it, it was like a blast from the past, of the good old days playing Sonic on the Mega Drive, but with graphics that are impressively better.
renamed the SWTFU Launcher.exe to SWTFU LauncherOLD.exe and renamed SWTFU.exe to SWTFU Launcher.exe
Getting this game to work required some additional tweaking. Each time you launch it, you need to ensure that you have selected a resolution of 800 to 1280, ticked the high details box, and set the controller to an Xbox 360 controller. This process was frustrating, so I created a configuration and renamed the SWTFU Launcher.exe to SWTFU LauncherOLD.exe and renamed SWTFU.exe to SWTFU Launcher.exe. By doing this, Steam believed it was loading the launcher, but it wasn't and jumped straight into the game. However, before doing this, you must ensure that you have set up your configuration as an Xbox 360 controller. The game functioned seamlessly from this point onwards, but the FPS seemed to be capped on the lower side. After researching online, I discovered that others had replaced the executable with a modified 60FPS version, which I also did. I downloaded the file from this website: https://www.gamepressure.com/download.asp?ID=69368 and dropped it into the game folder steamapps, common, star wars the force unleashed. I then renamed the SWTFU Launcher.exe to SWTFU.exe.old and renamed the downloaded exe to SWTFU Launcher.exe, as before. This increased the FPS and made the game enjoyable to play.
DXVK_ASYNC=1 RADV_PERFTEST=aco mesa_glthread=true %command%
The game installed and started without any issues using the default settings. However, when I set the graphics options to the highest level, I experienced stuttering and frame drops during gameplay. I experimented with the launch settings by enabling DXVK_ASYNC=1 and using the Proton GE version, which led to slight improvements and potentially playable performance. However, I found that explicitly setting the ACO (AMD Compiler) shader compiler for the RADV Vulkan driver resolved my issues by using the RADV_PERFTEST=aco parameter. Although it might seem surprising, since the ACO compiler should be the default option as of Mesa 19.3, this solution worked well for me. I also reverted to Steam's recommended Proton version for optimal results.
Just Works!
I was uncertain whether the server I was connected to was responsible for the drops or if it was the game itself. However, I was generally happy with my gameplay experience.
I used a mouse and keyboard to play the game, so I cannot provide feedback on controller functionality. Overall, the game installed and loaded without any issues. I joined a multiplayer server, moved around, collected items, and shot NPCs (as no other players were online at the time). The game runs flawlessly straight out of the box.
Just Worked!
Just worked without requiring any additional setup or adjustments.
Smashing Game! (Get it?)
The installation went seamlessly, and I was quickly drawn into the game's intense action, crashing into other cars and watching parts fly everywhere. To my delight, the graphics, sound, and controller support were all top-notch, making for a fantastic gaming experience.
PROTON_DXVK_ASYNC=0 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 DXVK_FEATURE_LEVEL=9_3 PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 WINEDLLOVERRIDES="msvcr80=b,builtin" PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 %command% & sleep 6; xdotool key RETURN
I was facing an error during startup of the game which stated "Error opening video. Check your display settings! Further Information can be found in the manual or readme.txt". After some troubleshooting, I discovered that the error was caused by the game's resolution output. To resolve this issue, I forced the game's resolution to be 1024x768, which allowed the game to bypass the error and start successfully.
As the game was originally designed for keyboard and mouse, my controller was not functioning while playing. However, I was able to download a controller template created by the community and successfully configure my controller to work with the game.
Note that this game is quite old and uses DirectX 9.0c, so compatibility is important for it to run properly. Attempting to launch the game without any modifications will result in the Steam logo spinning continuously and the game failing to start. To fix this, you will need to add the following launch option: "%command% & sleep 6; xdotool key RETURN". Once this issue is resolved, you may encounter a "Error opening video. Check your display settings! Further Information can be found in the manual or readme.txt" message. To address this, you must force the game resolution to 1024x768. Additionally, the game was originally designed to be played using a keyboard and mouse, so using a controller may require some tinkering. In my case, I had to download a community-provided controller template to map the keyboard and mouse buttons to the controller. It's worth noting that the graphics in this game are from a previous era and not as advanced as today's AAA games.
