If I run the game directly, using wine "/home/user/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Dragon Cliff/game.exe", the game starts.
It seems something is wrong with the proton wrapper itself for this game. I tried the default 3.x, 4.x and 5.x protons, and they all act the same. Other proton games work, so I know it's not systemic.
