problem of windiows management makes it very user unfriendly, unless the pop out window issue can be solved.
as indicated by Mars Rover, need to do the following: cd /home/USERNAME/.steam/debian-installation/steamapps/compatdata/754530/pfx/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Steam
open terminal and type:
ln -s /home/USERNAME/.steam/steam/userdata userdata
I still have some small issues:
- minor: an intro video windows that stays around, but i can get rid of it after a while -minor: the menu screen is not full screen and partly hidden (i've tried pseudo and full screen),but once i launch (with keyboard !) a training/ single mission, everything turns to normal :)
-i've disabled steam imput as found by Mars Rover
-The game now takes imput from joystick in the control/ axis menu: It's a bit tricky since the popup windows actually pops "down" under the main screen: i needed to set axis blind : the solution is to press change, set the key (for example fire button of joystick, then press enter from num pad), otherwise, the Alt Key will invite itself.
- the pop out issue makes it almost impossible to change the airplane in free flight missions: need to make Alt tab several times, but i did not really figure out how to select the plane (succeded only once).
Overall, performance is excellent, but ruined by the graphical interface issues :( Campaign can be started, but only the 1st one out of 3.

Symlink to a) the steam userdata folder in pfx/drive_c/Program Files x86/Steam, and symlinks to all the dlls in parts/core in the game root folder.
I got my CH Pro Pedals USB to work, but only when running the game via wine outside of Steam.

Using Proton Experimental (wine mono 6.3) and PROTON_USE_WINED3D, the game works and performance seems acceptable.
Couldn't get past menu without this.
A symlink seemed to be required as follows: ln -s $HOME/.steam/root/userdata /path/to/steam/steamapps/compatdata/754530/pfx/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Steam/userdata
Using CH Pro Pedals, not detected. Joystick works.
Can reach menu, with graphic glitches
The game need for now heavy work to arrive there :
- With vanilla proton, dll in part/core are not loaded, linking them in the main directory is necessary
- .Net is necessary, dotnet472 did not work for me, but dotnet461 is ok
With that, the game is loading and you can see the loading screen. Next it crashes on a video (ASF format) unreadable by GStreamer. Installing wmp11 with protontricks allowed me to reach the menu.
For now I have heavy graphical glitches, I keep digging.
