Works perfectly with Proton
Works perfectly fine but I found it to be a waste of time in the end with how terribly the last zone (Silver Cities) is balanced.

I only tested single player. Ran without any tinkering. No issues found so far.

For some reason, game is now working, 1 year after having tested with proton 7-4 for me. Using proton 7-6 now.
Valve seems to have included an install script to their downloader, downloading specific dependencies, which fixed this game.
The game does not work.
I tried with different versions of proton, but the game doesn't work, it seems to be running but no window appears or anything.

Set CPU frequency to 1700 to lower battery drain.
Changed cpu frequency

Lowered TDP

Startup: kind of works / Main menu: works / Gameplay: crashes
Tried Proton 8.0 and Proton Experimental.
Startup: the developer/publisher logo animations are not visible, but are audible.
Main menu: works.
Starting a game in quick play: the game crashes after the units and artifacts have been chosen.
Starting the campaign: no graphics are visible in the intro cutscene, only text. When the cutscene is skipped (and the gameplay would start), the game crashes.
Played perfectly.
Works perfectly based on a few hours of play. Didn't test multiplayer.
Was not able to run the game.
I came a bit further with a vanilla wine install of the game, but this one takes a bit to get working.
I can hear the intro videos but not see them. The the loading screen appears, after that it crashes back to steam.
Played through the first area of the game with no issues

This laptop is so old that the iGPU doesn’t support Vulkan, so using Wine D3D is required.
I’d recommend using a computer that’s slightly newer. On this 10-year-old laptop there’s occasional slowdown when there are large amount of units charging simultaneously (likely a CPU performance issue).
Works Perfectly.
does not work in proton 6.3
No error message.
Doesn't start.
Steam shows the game as "running" for a minute or two with high CPU usage, but the process closes down eventually.

Black screen then crash at launch
As noted below, there is an open bug on wineHQ for this game: https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30244
The bug has a workaround but I don't think this has been raised as a patch anywhere. This means that theoretically you could clone the repo of a proton fork such as https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom and then create and apply the workaround patch available here https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=63304&action=diff
Unfortunately building my own proton version is a bit beyond my skills but maybe this info will be useful for somebody.
