As of 2024, the online servers do not work, and the game will hang at the loading screen, as it can't connect to some random server somewhere. When you launch the game for the first time, it will launch the settings. Go to the Online tab, and unmark "auto".
Cuando cambias la configuracion por defecto (media), el juego va extremadamente mal, fuera de eso sin tocar nada va bien.
Install dotnet462 with protontricks will make Settings.exe work and change resolution/go fullscreen
When alt-tabbing or modify the audio volume with laptop hotkey will hang drastically the game for 10 seconds, witch can be annoying. However if you just play the game you wont have an issue
- Create a 64 bit wine prefix, either with winecfg or attempting to launch the game with steam
- protontricks 592580 dotnet462
- Go and install dotnet 40, then dotnet 45. In dotnet 45 installation ignore the warning message and just hit continue
- dotnet462 installation will fail. In fact it wont even open, but it's ok as long as protontricks downloads the exe file
- Launch the game on steam and wait for the first launch. Go to any kind of task manager you have on your distro and you will see that dotnet 462 will actually install anyway via first launch in steam
- The configuration file will open and you will be able to change the settings
PD: The game works well with vulkan, forcing opengl mode will result in just a black window. Enjoy

Runs out of box but for change settings need some additional work. For change settings like full screen mode I recommend create new wine 64bit prefix then install dotnet472 (Skip all errors about 32 bit prefix and every else) after this run settings.exe inside pes directory. When we change settings by clicking OK. The program will create settings.dat under KONAMI directory in our linux Document folder all what we need to do is copy this file and past it to Document's inside PES prefix created by steam.

Out of the box, the game runs in window mode. Fixing this requires either copying settings.dat from a Win installation. Or generating it using Settings.exe under Proton/Wine which requires several winetricks to make it run: dotnet45, allfonts. Works like a charm afterwards, including controller (XBox One via Bluetooth) and team modifications (PESGalaxy, installers working out of the box under Proton/Wine).

Worked like a charm after some tweaks.
To be able to run the game in full screen, I had to configure it using Settings.exe in the installation folder. This doesn't run without further tweaking. So I did the following:
0.) I started the game once to get basic configuration folders created.
1.) I created another wineprefix and used the following winetricks (using wine 4.5 staging): dotnet472, vcrun2015, allfonts
2.) I started the Settings.exe in that wineprefix using wine 4.5 (haven't tried doing so using proton, might also work). Then I was able to set up the configuration.
3.) I copied the created settings.dat to proton's wineprefix ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/592580/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/KONAMI/PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER 2018
4.) I started the game by steam launcher using Proton 4.2.2. It ran perfectly at around 120 fps.

Game seems to work but has no lighting at all when in-game, the players and the ball are therefore black and invisible, making the game unplayable

Had to take my settings from windows installation as settings.exe is not include in the proton simulation. After it was playable but only on low instead of high texture (like on win7). No crashes!!!

Instead of playing on high texture (like on windows), I can just play on low. It's not possible to set keys via settings.exe, I had to take the setting file from my Windows installation and override it.

Works out of the box

Runs in window.

Runs in windowed mode by default. Settings.exe needs .NET 4.5 framework or later to run. Didn't try to install .NET in the proton wine prefix. But if you use another wineprefix or a VM with PES 2018. You can run Settings.exe to enable full screen. Then copy settings.dat to ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/592580/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/KONAMI/PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER 2018.
