In short, make sure to diable cutscenes and check your controls settings. Some of the text is in a hard to read font.
At first, I tried with only keyboard and mouse but was unable to move once I started a game. Then I tried my steam controller but the input wasn't detected. I went to the Controls page, selected one of the keyboard and mouse profiles and started the game again. That resolved the input issue and I was able to play with mouse and keyboard but the Steam controller was still not detected.
I had to go into the Options settings and set the Cutscene Video Player to Disabled under the Audio & Video tab . The other options, Type 1 and Type 2, both crash the game in different ways. When you start a new game, a cutscene will play immediately so, you must disable them in order to play at all.
Using protontricks I was able to get to the main menu but trying to start playing ends up with an error and black screen.

The error was a random assortment of symbols.

Using protontricks to fix the missing DLL prevents the game from crashing on startup, but even then it never reaches the main menu; it loads to a black screen and sits there doing nothing further.

Needed to install mfc42 to launch at all. Had "dashed" fonts. Trying to change into full screen produces black screen. Trying to start a new game without full screen produces error.

I can open the game, but I cannot play
I installed mfc42.dll, and I reached the game menu. I also changed the Display to Fullscreen. But the game still crashes when I start a new game.
As reported earlier, the game will crash on boot unless you install the mfc42 dll which I did using protontricks with this command:
protontricks 268770 mfc42
There are some graphical issues with the font used for in-game dialogue but the text is still readable.
After starting the game, I had to change the options in the menu to full-screen instead of borderless window and then I could start a new save file. Otherwise the game would crash.
